About ESDO

This is What We Do

Background.jpg

We started o journey in 1988 with a noble vision to stand in solidarity with the poor and marginalized. Being a peoples' centered organization, ESDO envisioned for a society which will be free from inequality and injustice, a society where no child will cry from hunger and no life will be ruined by poverty. Near about three decades of relentless efforts to make this happen, ESDO has embraced new grounds and opened up new horizons to help the disadvantaged and vulnerable people to bring meaningful and lasting changes in their lives. During this long span, ESDO has adapted with the changing situation and provided the most time-bound services especially for the poor and disadvantaged. A community focused and people centered approach has been adapted by ESDO while consideration was given to the national policy and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as its guiding principle.

ESDO is one of the most dynamic organizations expanding its development interventions across 243 upazilas under 43 districts of Bangladesh covering over 7.5 million poor and vulnerable people.

ExecutiveDirector

Eco-Social Development Organization (ESDO) started its journey in 1988 with a noble wish to stand in solidarity with the poor and marginalized. Being a peoples' centered organization, ESDO envisioned for a society which will be free from inequality and injustice, a society where no child will cry from hunger and no life will be ruined by poverty. In our 30 years of relentless efforts to make this happen, we have broken new grounds and opened up new horizons. We have been tireless in our efforts to help the disadvantaged and vulnerable people find a way to support themselves and bring meaningful and lasting changes in their lives. We have continued our journey against great odds, and have pursued our dreams and goals.

I am happy to see our progress in Food Security, Rights & Governance, Health, Hygiene, Nutrition & Sanitation, Disaster Management and Climate Change Adaptation, Agricultural Development, Education, Micro Finance and ESDO special Initiatives.

However, the problems of climate change and natural disasters are increasing and deficiencies of nutrition remain a serious threat to those people who are already living in poverty. In this context of unequal distribution of opportunities and resources, we have been working with our participants to empower communities to access their rights and entitlements.

My long time deep involvement with the community development work has both enriched and enlightened me to acknowledge the plight of rural people and in the process strengthening my belief that in spite of low on education they can work exceptionally well under given opportunities and proper guidance. Our endeavor is to constantly help communities in maximizing their standard of living by emphasizing absolute participation in the different programs taken up for their development. It is widely acknowledged now that without community participation no program can succeed. The pace of development leading to sustainability picks up once they feel involved and enabled to take decisions for themselves.

As always, the challenges have been many, but as our vision gets transformed to veracity, many hurdles are watered down. We would not be reporting such progress if it were not for the unfailing support and contributions of our friends and supporters. I take this opportunity to thank our partners – Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF), World Food Programme (WFP), UNFPA/UNICEF/WHO-UN Joint Initiative, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Water Aid-Bangladesh, European Union/Directorate of Women Affairs-GOB, European Union/CARE-Bangladesh, MacArther Foundation/CARE-Bangladesh, PLAN-International Bangladesh, CARE-Bangladesh/USAID, HEKS-Switzerland, DFID-Maxwell Stamp/PLC, Bangladesh NGO Foundation, Local Government Engineering Department-GOB, Directorate of Health-GOB, Directorate of Primary Education-GOB, Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh, UCEP Bangladesh, International Labour Organization (ILO), Steps Towards Development (STD), Comprehensive Disaster Management Programme (CDMP) and HYSAWA Fund for sharing our collective dream and contributing their precious time and thoughts towards its realization. I would also like to thank the members of General Committee & Executive Committee of ESDO for their guidance and support over the years.

I would like to assure you of our commitment to provide unprecedented service to local rural communities and cater to their information, views and service needs. So far we have been consistent in maintaining high standards of performance and I assure all that we shall continue to maintain the same in the times to come. Needless to say, irrespective of the hardships and multifold challenges, whatever we have achieved today is not because of one person but the entire team of ESDO. Without their support nothing would have been possible.

Finally, I expressed my heartiest gratitude & warm congratulation to our great participants- who are successfully fighting against poverty and all sorts of discrimination and overcome many challenges. We shall overcome.
